Psychotherapy in Hawaii
Individual & Couples Therapy in Kailua, HI 96734 — In-Person and Telehealth (Clinicial Services Under Supervision Starting 2027)
Mona Kirstein, Ph.D., is pursuing licensure as a psychotherapist (LMHC) in Hawai‘i through her Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree. Beginning in 2027, she will begin seeing clients under supervision as part of her clinical training. In addition to her clinical path, Mona is also completing a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology, expanding her perspective on how people grow, heal, and find meaning.
Mona’s approach is integrative, person-centered, and trauma-informed, drawing from psychodynamic, relational, somatic, and emotion-focused modalities to support those navigating identity, attachment, and nervous system healing.
At this time, Mona does not provide psychotherapy. This page outlines her future clinical orientation and areas of focus for those who wish to learn more or join a waitlist.
“When we feel deeply seen, we find the roots of healing.”
Our emotional well-being is shaped by whether we feel seen and understood — both in early relationships and in our present lives. When we don’t feel seen, we can feel disconnected from ourselves and others.
Psychotherapy creates a safe, supportive space to bring your whole self into awareness, to explore your story, and to find new ways of relating with clarity, compassion, and depth.

Therapy that Sees the Whole Person
My approach is integrative, person-centered, and trauma-informed, drawing from psychodynamic, relational, somatic, and emotion-focused modalities — with a focus on attachment wounds and nervous system healing. I welcome diverse ways of thinking and being, including neurodiversity, and create a space where all of who you are belongs.

SAFETY & TRUST
Therapy begins with feeling safe and understood. I offer a supportive, attuned space where your experiences can be shared openly and held with care.

MIND–BODY CONNECTION
Our emotions live in the body as well as the mind. Somatic awareness helps bring balance and integration to your healing process.

DEPTH & INSIGHT
Together we explore the emotions, stories, and patterns that shape your life, opening space for greater understanding and lasting change.

HONORING DIVERSITY
Every story matters. I welcome the richness of cultural, gender, and neurodiverse experiences, affirming your identity as part of the whole therapeutic process.
My Approach
I believe each person already holds the wisdom to heal. Therapy offers a safe, collaborative space to share your story, deepen your understanding of feelings, thoughts, and patterns, and move toward greater wholeness and self-trust. I work relationally and at depth — the therapeutic relationship itself becomes a space where old patterns can surface, be understood, and begin to shift.
Areas of Focus
*Psychotherapy services in Hawai‘i beginning 2027 under supervision as part of clinical training.
Individual Therapy
I support adults facing a range of challenges, including:
- Burnout, especially among high-achieving professionals
- Stress, anxiety, or overwhelm
- Relationship difficulties or attachment wounds
- The lingering impact of trauma or neglect
- Identity exploration and self-acceptance
- Feeling disconnected, numb, or “not yourself”
- Life transitions or changes that unsettle your sense of stability
- Recurring patterns in relationships, mood, or self-perception that don’t shift despite effort or insight
Neurodiversity-Informed Care
I have a developing specialization in supporting autistic clients — especially late-diagnosed adults and teenagers who are navigating what this new understanding means for them. Beyond masking and exhaustion, many carry years of self-doubt, shame, or the sense of being “different” without knowing why. The constant work of adapting to a world not built for you can take a toll on your nervous system, relationships, and self-trust.
In therapy, we’ll create space to process these experiences, explore identity with compassion, and begin building a life that feels sustainable, authentic, and fully yours.
Couples Therapy
I work with couples who want to strengthen their emotional bond, improve communication, and navigate challenges together with more compassion and clarity. My approach is collaborative and supportive, with an emphasis on creating safety and understanding between partners. I am also preparing to complete advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a leading framework for deepening connection and building secure, resilient relationships.
